Book on the fine adjustment of watches and clocks, "Die Feinstellung der Uhren", a joint work by Dr. K. Giebel (1879-1950) and A. Helwig (1887 to 1974), published by Verlag Technik Berlin in 1952. The book is divided into two parts: a mostly theoretical part, written by K. Gable (pages 17 to 187), and a practical part with working instructions (pages 191 to 587), written by A. Helwig. This is followed by the publication of a test certificate with appendix, test values for chronometers, and a subject index. This is the first edition including the curve tables by Helwig mentioned in the text. The introduction of the first part begins with escapements, such as vestibule and cone pendulum, and oscillating escapements: the pendulum and the balance wheel with coil spring, tuning fork and oscillating crystals, just to name a few. The next subject area, with 16 chapters, is dedicated to the pendulum; this is followed by the coil spring and balance wheel with over 30 sections. The chapter on clock testing and monitoring completes the theoretical part. The second part of the book deals with the "work instructions for fine tuning" (cf. table of contents). By the scientific basis of Breguet curves, the expert will realise how current this book is when having to produce a Breguet coil for a Glashütte pocket watch. The extraordinary precision watches, such as those manufactured by A. Lange & Söhne, have such individual Breguet curves that it is impossible to achieve the required precision without the scientific basis that this book conveys. No other textbook explains, describes, and draws the insights of the inner Breguet curves as well as published here by the old master, Helwig, The operating principles of isochronism and the limits for isochronism are treated so vividly that the popularity that Alfred Helwig enjoyed among his students becomes palpable. The most complicated processes, such as the shaking of the fork, are clearly illustrated in large-scale demonstration drawings, and anyone reading it will not be surprised why a legendary pathos still surrounds the Helwig as a person. Inventor of the tourbillons

Apart from his pedagogical skills one must not forget that A. Helwig is also the inventor of the "semi-flying" and "flying" tourbillon. To date, his invention and execution in this field has not been outdone. The chapter "Influence of the escapement in the marine chronometer" particularly reveals the his knowledge of this escapement. His experience has been so thoroughly tested in his tourbillons that anyone who is confronted with this escapement will gratefully take note of the information in this book. The topics to be treated are perfectly organised so that subsequent textbooks, even those with photographed details, cannot approximate the dynamics and the spectrum achieved by the drawings in this book. With the teaching methods of classic watchmaking replaced by advancing quartz-based time measurement techniques, this book is a real asset to anyone confronted with, or wishing to be confronted with, traditional watchmaking.
